Walter "Uncle Wally" LaBuz Rome / Formerly New York Mills- On the sunny afternoon of Wednesday, June 3, 2015 Walter LaBuz, age 90, entered the gates of Hillbilly Heaven. There waiting for him were his favorites his brothers and sisters along with "Little Jimmy Dickens", Roy Acuff and the Wilburn Brothers. Walter was surrounded by his nieces for his final breath at Bethany Gardens Nursing Facility. Uncle Wally was born in New York Mills, NY on August 22, 1924 son of the late Stanley and Constance Dubiel LaBuz. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was stationed on the USS Alaska, while his brothers enlisted in other armed forces. Walter loved to tell stories of his time overseas, especially China. After serving his country, he was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base. When he retired Walter decided to open the Stein House Bar and Grill in New York Mills, which he owned and operated for many years. Uncle Wally is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, his former sister-in-law Nancy Mallek and his most precious canine "Chico" and his many cats that were left at his doorstep. Walter was predeceased by his beloved sisters and brothers; Gladys (Ted) Gachowski, Edmund (Frances) LaBuz, Michael (Jenny) LaBuz, Matthew (Ruth) LaBuz, Stanley LaBuz and Frank LaBuz, a beloved niece Christin Gachowski Martin, adopted son-in-law Cleo Valentine. Although Walter never married in his long life, he was predeceased by two special ladies, Michaelina Jeronomik and Barbara Hansen. The family would like to thank all the cousins and the fifth floor staff of Bethany Gardens. You all were so wonderful and compassionate to Walter, along with Stella, a very special lady friend who was always there for Uncle Wally. Also, a very special thanks to Corrine, who brought happiness so we wouldn't cry. We could not leave out great nephew, Kevin Torres, Jr., who would videotape and keep company with Uncle Wally on every visit from Colorado. All the video tapings enable Uncle Wally's memory to live forever. All of our Sunday rides to Voss's and Nicky Doodles will be replaced by fishing in heaven with Cleo. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus & St. Casimir Cemetery Chapel, Wood Rd., Whitesboro, NY. There are no calling hours.
