Please share a memory of Isabel Mercurio to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Isabel Mercurio Mannino Isabel (Nani) Mercurio Mannino, age 92, of Rome, departed our earthly world on Saturday, March 19, 2016, the Feast of St. Joseph, but will forever remain in our hearts. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by those who love her and whom she loved. She was born on September 22, 1923, the daughter of Rosario and Angelina Froio Mercurio. Isabel was raised in Rome, NY with her two brothers, George and Joseph and sisters, Rose and Elena. She graduated from Rome Free Academy Class of 1941. On July 16, 1944, at Star of the Sea Church in San Francisco, CA, she was married to James Mannino, a marriage of 64 years until his passing in April 2009. Together, they had one child, Joan. Isabel worked at Griffiss Air Force Base at the Office of Personnel Management as a civil service examiner and trainer, traveling all over the Northeast, for many years until her retirement in the mid-1970's. She was the consummate sister, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, aunt and friend, and caretaker to her parents, siblings and in-laws, who went before her. Now, once again, she will enjoy the laughter and companionship of her family. Isabel was the most remarkable Nani to her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Isabel lived a life of creativity. We know she is again writing her beautiful poetry, painting watercolors of flowers, and embroidering exquisite pieces to hang on the wall. Nani was an incredible cook; some of her specialties included her amazing, perfectly round meatballs (which no one else can replicate), sauce, arancini, veal cutlets, Manhattan clam chowder, biscotti, pizzelle (also perfectly symmetrical), any Italian Christmas cookie and her Sunday roast-beef dinners. She loved her cats, Nori, Ronni and Mort, and delighted in their antics. Not only was she perfectly stylish and meticulous always, but she also kept a very neat and clean house (you could eat off her floor!) and even would wash her vegetables with soap and water. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Mark Lomery, Rome, grandchildren; Ashley Lomery and her husband, Kevin Lisewski, Philadelphia, PA, Justin Lomery, Los Angeles, CA and great-granddaughter Elaina Lomery, Rome. Also surviving are her "sister", Frances Mannino, Utica, brother-in-law Larry Migliori, Rome and sister-in-law, Beverly Mannino, Marietta, GA; her nieces and nephews, Ernie, Rosemary, Angela, Larry Jr., Laraine, Joe, John, Karen, Toni Lynn, Michael, Mark, Randy, Maria and Tommy; numerous great nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Mary, Ilene, Bernice and Angie. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Jim, her brothers George and Joseph Mercurio, her sisters Rose Migliori and Elena and husband August Scalero, sisters-in-law Mary and Dottie Mercurio and brothers-in-law; John, Tom and Sam Mannino, and nephew Ronald Mercurio. The family wishes to express a special thank you to the entire staff of the ICU at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, especially nurses Jenny, Jessie and Laura. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, 210 E. Dominick St., on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating.
