Phyllis Hawkins, 81 of Rome passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born in Rome NY on September 15, 1941, daughter of the late Dominick and Angela (Mary) DelPiano Capponi. Phyllis graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1959. After graduation she attended beauty school. Throughout her life she enjoyed her work as a telephone operator for Nunn’s Answering Service, a bartender at various local restaurants and as a hairdresser. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St John the Baptist Church.
Phyllis is survived by a daughter, Cathleen Barney, Rome, a son Christopher (Mi Hui) DeMartini, Albuquerque NM, grandchildren Stephanie (Tom) Carr, Cynthia DeMartini, and great-granddaughters Madilyne Anzalone and Charlotte Carr.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Robert Capponi and an infant son, Michael DeMartini in 1970.
To honor Phyllis’ wishes there will be no calling hours. Services will be private. Burial will be in St John the Baptist Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Phyllis’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
