Phillip “Tim” Newton

1938 - 2026

Phillip T. Newton, aged 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 28, 2026, surrounded by the warmth of his loving family and his devoted caregiver, Melissa, whom Phil absolutely adored. Born in Rome, on November 6, 1938, son of the late John W. and Margaret (Griffin) Newton, Phil brought a lifetime of laughter, kindness, and light into the world.

There is a beautiful belief that when a cardinal appears at your window, it is a visit from a loved one who has passed. In the tender moments following Phil's passing, two cardinals were seen kissing gently on his fence; a sweet, comforting sign knowing that Phil and his beloved wife Bernice are now joyfully reunited.

Phil and Bernice shared a beautiful life filled with adventure. They absolutely loved to travel all across the United States, creating countless beautiful memories camping alongside their dearest, lifelong friends, Fred and Sharon Balum.

Phil's incredible legacy of love lives on through his family. He is survived by his five cherished children; John W. Newton, Roxanne (Jim) Dean, Christine (Richard) Kershner, Jennifer (Mark) Hawkins, and Kassandra Newton. He was the proudest grandfather to his grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life; John Newton Jr., Cathy Newton, Wade Alam, Samantha (Alam) Fernandez, Paul Marinuzzi, Anthony Aiello, Alyssa Hawkins, and Hayden Hawkins, as well as several nieces and nephews.  He also leaves behind his sweet, faithful fur-baby, Mylie, who brought him so much comfort. Phil was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret, his wife Bernice, a brother, Lewis Newton, and a sister, Roselynn Lolo.

Phil was a man who truly knew how to brighten a room. He always had a clever joke or a wonderful story ready to share, matching his endless mission to make the people around him laugh and smile. His vibrant spirit, quick wit, and generous heart will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, but he will live on forever in our hearts.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to Christian, from Hospice and Palliative Care, for the kindness and compassion shown to Phil during this difficult time.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday June 2, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, lower East Dominick Street in Rome. There are no calling hours.
