RIP Andy. I have missed your summer visits and handwritten correspondence for the last several years. Your love of country and history always came through in your letters.

During the years, 2003-2017, Andy became a member of my Virginia Family as a dear friend and companion to my aunt. During their 2-3 times a year visits, he found himself the only male among 4 to 5 sisters and their mostly female adult daughters for days. It took a good measure of grace and wisdom to know when to talk and how far to take personal opinions in those hours ... sometimes, he succeeded!
I can't say I knew him long and well, but Andy wore his heart on his sleeve ... or his head! (You can see it in the recent picture.) I was always impressed, especially in one-on-one conversations.
Andy was a unique individual ... sadly ... one of a kind ... or perhaps just of another era. He was the epitome of "The Great Generation" of men and women who stepped up and did their part, without lingering thought to personal sacrifice. God, country and family were the obvious guiding lights of his life. I respected that.
Over those visits, and ours to Baltimore, I observed his caring for my aunt ... in the first years at the joy in their shared time ... and in the last years, on my bi-weekly visits from Silver Spring, his fierce loyalty and care-giving, often at personal sacrifice and even detriment, as her health waned and she eventually passed. We would sing gospel hymns together and he would often turn away in tears. I loved him for those moments and that loyalty in those circumstances.
Andy was indeed ... one of a kind. May he rest in peace in Jesus' presence.

As the oldest Foster sibling still here, I feel slightly obligated to share some words. First I want to thank Andy for his service to our country but I also want to thank him for his love of our Mom and all of us in the Foster family. He always had a smile on his face and and an upbeat attitude. He gave of his time snd energy and filled a void in our Mom’s life which spilled over to our entire family. RIP Andy, I feel you are catching up with your brothers and sisters and old friends and what a great gathering it must be. Thanks for a job well done, you’ll be missed,

My cousin Matt said it quite well in another post on this Tribute Wall. To me, like many of my cousins in the Foster Clan, Andy was the only grandfather I ever knew on my mother’s side of the family. He was a fun-loving, kind and compassionate man who cared very deeply for my grandmother and all of us in the extended Foster family. His smiling face and the stories of his many travels and adventures at our holiday gatherings over the years will be sorely missed. During one such holiday party many moons ago, when I was still an eager, though naive midshipman home on semester break, he paid me a simple compliment I’ll never forget, though I’ll confess it means far more to me now, 27 years later than I realized at the time with my whole career still in front of me. With a grin on his face and a wink, he shook my hand firmly and said “Jason, you really look like a Navy man!” It makes me smile now to remember that evening, and those simple words! Andy was a great American, a kind man, and as much a member of our family as anyone. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

My deepest condolences are with the Stachnik family and Andy’s foster families. Andy is a true hero: Dedicated to his family, church, community and country. He was extremely proud to be an American and to fight for his country. He was a hard worker and never gave up. He is truly cherished.

I knew Andy for over 50 years and can honestly say that he was a good, kind, and caring man who loved his country, his church, his family, and his friends. The many acts of kindness he extended over the years to my wife, myself, and our children, will always be remembered. From giving us our first boxes of Christmas ornaments, fixing our car when I was deployed, and caring for my wife's mother when she was ill - he was a man you could always depend on. While he was always proud of his Polish heritage, he was most proud to be an American. He never promised anything he couldn't deliver, but always found a way to deliver what was needed. He lived life on his terms, and while he endured a number of hardships, he found a way to make peace and the most of whatever life sent his way. He was fun, knowledgeable, argumentative, headstrong, frustrating, interested in just about everything, and one of the best men I have ever known. He was a true representative of this nation's "Greatest Generation" . We will not see the likes of Andy Stachnik again - and we will miss him every day for the rest of our lives. Andy was the closest thing I had to a Grandfather as my parents' Fathers both passed away when they were teenagers. He was always kind to me and I'll always remember him fondly. I'm extremely grateful for his service to our country, but more importantly, to our family. May God Bless you and all who knew you Andy......
