Robert L. Nicholson
Robert L. Nicholson, 95, of Rome, passed away on Monday. November 18, 2024 at the Residential Health Care Facility - SNF at Rome Health. Robert was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 25, 1928, son of the late George and Mary (Kasper) Nicholson. The family moved to Huntington, Indiana when Robert was a young boy.
Robert graduated from Huntington Catholic School in 1945, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November 1948. He was honorably discharged in August of 1952 where he had been assigned to the Griffiss AFB as an aircraft and engine mechanic. He continued in that capacity as a civilian for many years. Robert advanced at Griffiss from aircraft and engine mechanic on the F-86 fighter aircraft, to flight line inspections, ground control (Base Operations), safety division inspections for compliance, and conducted squadron safety briefings.
In 1973 Robert joined the US Department of Labor (OSHA) as a safety compliance officer. He attained the position of Safety Supervisor during his tenure with OSHA. Robert retired from the U.S. Government in 1989.
On May 14, 1955 Robert married Ann D. Nicholson at St. John the Baptist Church, a union that lasted 68 years, until her passing in June 2023. Surviving are his daughters, Ellen Cucci and her husband Lyn Whitcomb and Susan Waters, all of Rome; two grandchildren, Anthony Cucci and his wife Anna, and AnneMarie Haumesser and her husband Luke; and great-granddaughter, Celia Ann; who brought him great joy. He is also survived by four sisters, Winnie Eckert (Markle, IN), Theresa Hammond and Joan Powers (Louisville, KY) and Cathy Pursifull (Weiser, ID) and one brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Nicholson (Ft. Wayne, Indiana). He was predeceased by two brothers Tom and Stan Nicholson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at 1:30 pm at St. John the Baptist Church, 210 E. Dominick St. Rome with Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. The family will receive friends and family from 12:30 - 1:30 pm at the church prior to the Funeral Mass. Burial will be in St. John’s the Baptist Cemetery.
Robert’s family would like to thank the entire staff of Residential Health Care Facility staff at Rome Health for the kindness and compassion shown to him through his time at the facility. The staff from Dietary, Activities, Housekeeping, Maintenance, CNA’s, Nursing and Administration work to provide an atmosphere of family, love and support to all residents.
