Obituary of James P. Scherzi

James "Pat" Patrick Scherzi , 94, of Rome, passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at home. He was born in Rome, N.Y. on April 12, 1914, son of the late John and Mary Petrofino Scherzi. Mr. Scherzi graduated from Rome Free Academy and Syracuse University where he received his accounting degree. He served with the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. On July 14, 1945 he married Margaret Colangelo in St. John The Baptist Church. Mr. Scherzi retired after 20 years as an operating accountant for the Northern Communications Area at Griffiss Air Force Base. Pat was a recipient of the Air Force Communications Command's "Accounting and Finance Civilian of the Year Award" in 1980. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Government Accountants Association and enjoyed golfing and cooking for his family. Surviving besides his wife, Margaret, are three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Pat Scherzi, Napa Valley, Calif., James and Holly Scherzi, Syracuse, Joseph and Frances Scherzi, Syracuse; three grandchildren, David, Kimberly and James and fiancee Dana Stern. Also surviving are a sister, Carrie Scherzi, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Antoinette Colangelo, all of Rome; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Scherzi, who passed away in 2007, two brothers, Frank and Joseph Scherzi, and three sisters, Loretta Fauci, Theresa Bostwick and Connie Hall. A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. where relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to St, Jojn the Baptist Memorial Fund. Arrangements are by the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St.
