Irene A. Smith
Irene A. Smith, 95, of Rome, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011 at Rome Memorial Hospital. She was born Enola, Pa. on March 17, 1916, daughter of the late Niles A. and Laura Mae Isenberg Drexler. Irene graduated from Enola High School. On July 14, 1940, she married J. Gehring Smith in Enola, Pa. He passed away April 18, 1972. Irene retired from Griffiss Air Force Base. Mrs. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Golden Years Senior Group, formerly serving as president for 22 years. She joined the Holly Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in 1949, and served as past matron, and was a former state Grand of ADAH.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Janet Smith, Rome; two grandchildren, Rebecca Ferlo, Rome, David and his wife Sandra Smith, W. Virginia; five great grandchildren, Frank Ferlo III, Samantha Ferlo, Alex Ferlo, Nathan Smith and Christopher Smith. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Smith, Hillside, N.J.; and three nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, a son, Gary Smith, a brother, Niles Drexler, and a sister, Wilida Stoffer.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Rome Cemetery, where friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St.
