John J. Smaldon, Sr. John J. Smaldon, Sr., 65, of Westernville, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009. He was born in Rome, N.Y. on December 12, 1943, son of the late Arthur and Dora Compo Smaldon. John attended Rome schools. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Smaldon retired as a foreman from National Grid after 25 years with the Tree Crew. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, Harley Davidson riding and playing at the Casino. Surviving are a son, John J. Smaldon, Jr. and his fiance, Cheryl Rios, Whitesboro; a step daughter, Cindy and her husband, Thomas Retcho, New Windsor, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ann Smaldon, Rome; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Philip Newton, Rome, Ruth and Joseph Fraccola, CA;a sister-in-law, Camille Smaldon, CA; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. He is also survived by his loving and devoted companion, Karen Rodney, with whom he shared a happy and fulfilling life. John was predeceased by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Fred Francescone, and a brother, Edward Smaldon. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home,Inc., 218 W. Court St ., and St. John the Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westernville American Legion.
