Obituary of Genevieve DeMatteis

Genevieve DeMatteis Genevieve Dematteis, 95, of Rome, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility. She was born in Rome, NY on March 23, 1914, daughter of the late Donato and Anna DeFreo DeCristo. Genevieve was a 1932 graduate of Rome Free Academy. On June 27, 1936, she was united in marriage to Albert J. DeMatteis in St. John the Baptist Church. He passed away August 23, 1959. Mrs. DeMatteis was employed as a receptionist/secretary at Revere Copper and Brass Inc. Printing Plant for 32 years, retiring in 1975. While fully employed, she attended evening division classes at Mohawk Valley Community College, after which she transferred to Utica College and finished her junior year where she was elected into the Alpha Omicron Chapter Honorary Society of Syracuse University. After 13 years of evening classes, she received a bachelor's degree in 1976 from Utica/Rome College of Technology. Upon retirement from Revere, she became a substitute teacher of the Rome City School District, the Rome Developmental Center, and a part-time teacher at Mohowk Valley Community College Rome Campus. Genevieve was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and it's Congregation of Mary. She was very proud of her beloved parents and their Italian heritage. She is survived by a sister, Della Gilston, New York City; and several loving nieces, nephews and great nephews. Genevieve received exceptional care and devotion from her beloved niece, Donna Budd, Whitesboro, and niece-in-law, Carol Rieck, Rome. Also surviving are special cousins, Theresa Sciarillo, Rome, and Kay DelPiano, of Auburn; a special Goddaughter, Christine Giampoccaro, Rome;and special Godson, Angelo D'ambrosi, Rome; and special friends, John and Kathy Scaccia and Susan Pugh. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; three brothers, Sam Decristo, John DeCristo; and Genaro (Jerry) DeCristo; and four sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ubell, Theresa and Robert Bourne, Christine Reeves and Filomena Milam. The Family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. David Kirk and the staff at Rome Hospital 2 North and the staff of the 3rd Floor for their care and compassion shown to Genevieve. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., and at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Genevieve's memory to St. John the Baptist Church, 210 E.
