Elizabeth 'Betty' R. Yozzo Elizabeth "Betty" R. Yozzo, 83, of Rome, passed away Monday, August 24, 2009 at Bethany Gardens with her loving husband at her side, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on October 24, 1925, daughter of the late Joseph J. Mattiello Ph.D. and Josephine Critelli Mattiello. Betty graduated from Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1943, and New York University in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. On June 28, 1947, she married Joseph P. Yozzo in St. Savior Church in Brooklyn. Prior to marriage, she was employed by Lord and Taylor in New York City. Betty was a homemaker and a bookkeeper for her husband's business. She enjoyed golfing, dancing to her husband's and his fellow musicians music, reading, going to the movies with her daughters, attending plays with her sisters in New York City, and her dogs, Meatball, Twinkle, Hoss and Buster, and most of all she enjoyed riding her bicycle. Surviving besides her husband, Joe, are three daughters and a favorite son-in-law, Barbara and Ronald Gladwin, Susan Mendiola and Christine Yozzo, all of Rome; four grandchildren and their spouses, Nicholas (Jennifer) Mendiola, Dryden, N.Y., Jacklyn (Derek) Levisay, Leander, TX, Aaron Breault and Anthony Provost, both of Rome; a great grandchild, Sydney Rozlin Mendiola, Dryden, N.Y. Also surviving are two sisters, Rosamond Mattiello and Barbara Mattiello, both of New York City; a brother-in-law, Marlon Brown, New Jersey; nieces and nephews; a cousin, Anna Iozzo; good friends, Barbara Falcone, Jack and Rosalie Palmer, Dolly and John Flaver; many other friends; and a companion and "adopted" daughter, Michelle Ayers. She was predeceased by a son, Nicholas, on August 27, 1960, and a sister, Margaret Kimm. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Bethany Gardens for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., and at St. Mary's Church at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Memorial contributions in Betty's name may be made to the Rome Humane Society, P.O. Box 4572, Rome, N.Y. 13442, or Jervis Public Library, 613 N. Washington St., Rome, N.Y. 13440.
