Obituary of Albert J. Giardino

Albert J. Giardino, 93, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility. He was born in Rome, NY, on February 11, 1925, the son of the late David and Josephine DeGrazio Giardino. Al graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1943. Then, at the age of 18, he entered the US Army and served as a tank driver in the 749th Tank Battalion for the remainder of WWII. At war's end, he was honorably discharged, as a Tech Fourth Grade; having received The Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. On June 28, 1947, he married Carmel Richards in St. Mary's Church. She passed away on February 10, 1981. On November 20, 1981, he married Josephine Messineo DiCaprio. She passed away on July 18, 2005. Al retired in July of 1984 from the New York Telephone Company, as a Communications Serviceman. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, an active member of the Toccolana Club, and a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers.
Survivors include his children; Donna (Sam) Guiliano, Bob (Denise) Giardino, Carol (Doug) Meiss, all of Rome: G. Robert (Cheri) DiCaprio of Baldwinsville, and Joseph (Ann) Messineo of Manlius. His Grandchildren include; Lisa Guiliano, and Aaron (Tammy) Guiliano, of Rome; Jacob (Pete Paris) Meiss of Rome and Syracuse; Lydia and Dominic DiCaprio, of Baldwinsville; Emily (Mark) Zipprich and Olivia Messineo, of Manilus. His Great-Grandchildren include; Santino, Gracie and Luca Guiliano of Rome. He also leaves numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Al was pre-deceased by his four brothers; Santo, Vinny, Tony, and Louis Giardino; and his four sisters; Margaret Ciotti, Rose Marasco, Matilda Uriate and Marge Catone and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility and the staff of 3 North for the love, care, and compassion they showed to Al and his family during the 5 years he lived there.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, beginning at 9:45 am from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd. Followed at 10:30 am, by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's/St. Peter's Church on James St., celebrated by the Rev. Phillip Hearn. Burial, with military honors will take place immediately following at St. Mary's Cemetery, on W. Liberty St. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday, July 30, 2018, from 4-7pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's/St. Peter's Parish, Polycycstic Kidney Disease, or Hospice & Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
