Joseph M. Mastrangelo, (Lt. Col. Ret. U.S. Air Force), 71, of Rome, passed away Monday, October 15, 2018, at home with his loving family by his side. He was born in Rome, NY, on August 21, 1947, son of the late Ralph and Jennie Colasanti Mastrangelo. On June 16, 1973 he married Patricia Esposito in St. John the Baptist Church. Joe was a 1965 graduate of Rome Free Academy, 1976 graduate of Marcy School of Nursing and received his BNS in 1982 from SUNY. He was a Registered Nurse Administrator at Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. Joe served as an instructor and Commandant of the Basic Medical Corpsman School in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was Officer in Charge of the 439th Mental Health Group ASTS - USAF, member of the Air Force Critical Incident Stress Management Program. Joe served thirty-five years of military service, which he felt honored to serve his country; along with his colleagues and brothers in arms. To that accord Joe developed a special friendship to his dear friend, Major John Cornish and wife Nancy. He was member of St. Peter's Church, Toccolana Club, Rome American Legion and was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scout Leader. Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, bocce and was a New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was affectionately known as "Papa Joe" to his grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife, Patricia Ann Mastrangelo, sons and daughters; Michael A. Mastrangelo, Vanessa and her husband Glenn Griffiths, (two daughters and a granddaughter ) David and his wife Nicole Mastrangelo, Amelia Mastrangelo, grandchildren, Victoria Mastrangelo, Olivia Griffiths, Lennin and Truman Mastrangelo. Also surviving is a sister, Barbara Mastrangelo , Patricia's brother, Vincent Esposito, a niece Rachael Esposito and her fiancé, Bryan, nephew, Vincent Esposito and his fiancé Will, adopted family ,the Traviglia's; Leia, James, Godson Anthony and Arianna. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Jennie Mastrangelo, his father-in- law and mother-in-law, Vincent and Lena Esposito, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The family would like to express a special thank you to all Joe's doctors and staff, loving friends, relatives, along with a special thank you to his dear friend, Dr. Robert Feeney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, with the Rev. Philip A. Hearn officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd., on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Jervis Public Library, Disabled American Veterans or Hospice and Palliative Care.
