Rose Vescio Sanzone Rose Vescio Sanzone, 94, of Rome, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009, after a brief illness, with her sons and daughter-in-law by her side. Born on July 10, 1915 in Rome, N.Y., she was the daughter of Guiseppe Vescio (Sambiase, Italy) and Marietta Stumpo Vescio (Calabria, Italy). Both parents immigrated through Ellis Island to start a new life in the United States. Rose lost both parents when she was 14 years old in 1929, leaving 6 children in a home on Bouck St. Since the house was paid for, social services would not provide assistance to the family until Rose wrote a letter to the President of the United States, Franklin Delanor Roosevelt. Federal and county officials showed up to the house to evaluate the family and ultimately provided cloths, food and coal so the family could stay together. They kept the house. Her older brothers Carl and Phil quit school to take jobs to help provide for the family. Rose being the eldest sister, provided for the home. Mrs. Sanzone worked on vegetable farms during high school to help the family. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1933. After graduation she held various jobs including the Sanzone Market, where she met her future husband. She married Joseph Sanzone on June 1, 1936 in Rome and lived on Highland Avenue for over 60 years. She worked at the Rome Hospital for over 21 years. She enjoyed traveling, making several trips to Italy to see relatives. She also traveled in the US, Canada and Australia. Family and friends were important to Rose with vacations spent traveling to see relatives in New York City, Pennsylvania and Canada. Hobbies included painting artwork, piano playing and knitting. Community service was an important part of her life serving with many organizations including, Board Member and Treasurer of the City of Rome Credit Union, member and President of the Rome Women's Republican Club since 1936, Federation of the Republican League of Voters, Italian-American Heritage Association of Utica, chairperson of the Reunion Committee of RFA Class of '33, Secretary RFA Alumni Board of Directors, Christian Women's Association of Rome, Treasurer of AFL-CIO Rome City Employee's Union, Girl Scout leader, Agatha Players of Rome, Kingsley Camp Counselor and several others. Surviving are three children, a daughter and son-in-law, Bernie and Larry Remillard of S. Carolina, a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Phyllis Sanzone of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Kellie Sanzone of Watertown; one sister Caroline Trophia of Rome; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Mike Aiello; and several nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her husband Joseph, two daughters and a son-in-law, Marla and Varant Najarian, Anne Aiello; her brothers, Carl, Phil and Jim "Jiggs" Vescio; a sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Nick Fera. Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., followed by her funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rome Home, 417 N. Washington St., Rome N.Y. 13440.
