John Gattari, 90, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Bethany Gardens. He was born in Rome, NY, on June 24, 1928, son of the late Venturino and Assunta Bernadini Gattari. John attended Rome Schools. He served with the U.S. Navy from1955 -1956. John retired from Griffiss Air Force Base and was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. He had a love for golf and was known for his excellent popcorn making at DeMatteo's and always wearing a hat. John had a passion for a well groomed lawn. Surviving are nieces and nephews; Gail M. Spadafora, Victor and his wife Lynn Gattari, all of Rome, Richard and his wife Mary Jo Frasca, Sandusky, OH, Barbara and her husband Tom Shortslef, Victor, NY, great nieces and nephews; Jennifer, Ryan, Jason, Sarah, Nicholas, Amanda, Kristin, and Stephanie and several great great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Dominick "Lindy" and Josephine Gattari, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Anthony "Red" Spadafora, Lena and Enrico "Ricky" Frasca, and a niece, Nancy Spadafora. The family wishes to express a special thank you to the Bethany Gardens Staff who took such wonderful care of John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 2:00p.m., at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. The family will receive friends at church from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to the Funeral Mass. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to St. John the Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 210 E. Dominick St., Rome, NY 13440, or a charity of one's choice.
