Mary Spinelli

Mary Spinelli, 101, of Rome, passed away, on Saturday, April 20, 2019, with her loving family at her side. She was born in Rome, NY, on May 15, 1917, a daughter of the late John and Theresa (Brognano) Surace. Mary was educated in Rome schools. On August 6, 1938 she married, Anthony N. (Josh) Spinelli, in St. John the Baptist Church. He passed away on August 5, 1986. Mary retired from Griffiss Air Force Base where she was employed for twenty-seven years as a Computer Tape Librarian. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church.

Mary was an inspiration to her family and many friends. Her quick wit and sense of humor attracted people to her. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, shoveling snow (honestly), and most of all spending time with her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Domenico, Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Georgia Spinelli, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Anthony N. and Millie Spinelli, Michael and Valerie Spinelli, Joseph and Amy Spinelli, Nick Domenico, Maria and Pauline Domenico, David and Cindy Domenico, and Mark and Kelly Domenico; great-grandchildren, Elleanna, Nora, Matteo, and Mariella Spinelli, Michelle and Ben Wakeling, Theresa Domenico, Johnathan, Lauren, Nathan, David, Josh, Alex, and Dominic Domenico. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a beloved son-in-law, Nicholas (Butch) Domenico; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Viola Surace, and Anthony and Corena Surace; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Charles Searles, Tina and James Sonsini, and Rose and Paul Vaccaro.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 12:00 noon at St. John the Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Angelicchio officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the Funeral Mass from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Road.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Bethany Gardens, especially Rosemary, Tracy, Patrick, and Katherine, for the excellent care and for making Mary feel happy during her stay with them
