Joseph F. "Tamby" Tamburino, 93, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Bethany Gardens. He was born in Rome, NY, on June 14, 1926 son of the late Gabriel and Mary Porto Tamburino. Joe was a graduate of Rome Free Academy Class of 1944. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corp., Trained as a bottom ball turret gunner on B-17 bombers Joe was to be deployed to the fighting forces in Japan. His duel training as a radio operator allowed him to continue flying in post war occupied Japan. Honorably discharged in 1947 he attended Body and Fender school in Oakland California. He also ran a successful body shop in Oakland at same time allowing him to know many of the car builders and racers of the day. Joe was an avid roller skater and while skating met his future wife. In 1955, he married Jean Morgan in St. Patrick's Church, Utica. She passed away August 16, 1998 after forty-three happy years. Joe was the owner of Tamby's Auto Body Service which he ran in Rome for sixty years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and VFW Rome Post #2246. He enjoyed working outdoors, be it gardening, landscaping or just working in his shop. Family barbeques and functions were always a favorite. His love of people made him very happy and successful. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law; Jean and her husband, Dale Oxe, Chantilly, VA, Pamela Tamburino, Weehawken, NJ, Margarite Tamburino Krupa and her husband Stephen, Weehawken, NJ., a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Tanja Tamburino, Rome, four grandchildren; Emily Oxe, Trevor Tamburino, Jack Tamburino and Tyler Tamburino. Also surviving are two sisters; Hilda Vaccaro and Carmella Tagliaferri both of Rome and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters; Mary DePasquale, Florence DeBonzo and Lena Colangelo, four brothers; Louis, Salvatore, Anthony and Gene Tamburino. The family would like to express a special thank you to: Rome Police and Fire dept's., Rome City Hall, the staff at Bethany Gardens, home care giver's: Kathy Harvey, Tia Mahoney, Barb Nelson, and Leaona King. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call at the Nicholas J.
