Obituary of Howard "Dutch" N. Smith

Howard "Dutch" N. Smith, 91, of Rome, passed away, Friday, November 1, 2019, at Abraham House, Rome. He was born in Rome, NY, on January 17, 1928, son of the late, George and Maude Race Smith. Dutch was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. He served with the U. S. Army from 1946 to 1947. On June 24, 1950 he married, Patricia A. Rossi, in St. Mary's Church. Dutch retired from Stan's Sea Food as a sales representative and had managed the former Paramount Diner. He was a former member of Rome Elks Club and HP Smith Post #24 American Legion.
Surviving besides his wife, Pat, are two daughters and a son-in-law; Christine M. and James Malone, Linda A. Smith, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J., and Peggy Smith, all of Rome, a grandson, Colin M. Smith. Also surviving are a brother and sisters-in-law; George and Doris Smith, Oneonta, Janice Smith, Rome, and several nieces, nephews, and his coffee buddies at McDonald's. He was predeceased by a daughter, Debra M. Smith, who passed away in 2012, a son, Howard N. Smith, Jr., who passed away in 2018, his parents; George and Maude Smith, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael and Myrtle Rossi, brothers and sisters-in-law; Harry and Virginia Smith, Fred Smith, Frank and Vera Smith, a sister, Marge Roberts, and a brother-in-law, Michael Rossi.
Services will be private. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
