Anne A. Varner, 96, of Rome, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She was born in Rome, NY, on April 27, 1923, daughter of the late Leonard and Rosina DaSharro Nigro. Anne was a 1941 graduate of Rome Free Academy. On July 18, 1945 she married Leo L. Varner in New York City. He passed away September 14, 2005. Anne retired from Griffiss Air Force Base in 1992, where she was one the first civilian employees to work at the base. She was a member of St. Paul's Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Celiarose Varner, Dewitt, Ml, a daughter, Lori Stebbins, Rome, former son-in-law, Eric Stebbins, Rome, grandchildren; Abigail Varner and Jack Flakne, Brandon and Katie Varner, and Tiffany Stebbins, four great-grand-children; Elliot and Elaina Varner, Cora and Everett Flakne, several nieces and nephews including; Amanda and Tom Thomas, Eugene and Carolyn Squillace, Marilyn and Tom Crumb. She was predeceased by three brothers, Dominick, Joseph and Mondo Nigro, two sisters; Carmel Squillace and Mary Cataldi. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Shirley and Tasha for their kindness and compassion shown to Anne. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 6:00 p.m., at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd, with the Rev. Robert Kelly. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-6 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
