Lawrence W. Powell, age 80, of Rome, was embraced in God's loving arms on Friday, May 8, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in Rome, New York on January 28, 1940, son of the late Kenneth G. and Loretta M. McCarthy Powell.
Larry graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1958. He served four years in the Army National Guard. He worked as a faithful employee of Revere Copper and Brass for 41 years until his retirement. Prior to Revere, he worked at A & P and later as Frozen Food Manager of Loblaw's Grocery Store until its closing.
He was an avid deer hunter and a member of the Moose Lodge. Like his father before him, Larry served as keeper of the town clock located in the First Presbyterian Church. His father, Ken, a watchmaker, began caring for the clock in 1958. Larry took over this responsibility in 1986. Together they cared for the city's clock for over 62 years.
On June 1, 1963, Larry married his high school sweetheart. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Nicoletta (Nickie) M. Falconio Powell; two daughters, Karen A. Powell of New Jersey, Gail E. Powell of Nevada and Kay Hetherington who was like a daughter to him; five grandchildren, Sarah, Nicole, Richelle, Jennifer and Michael; great-grandchildren, Giovanna and Angelo and ten additional great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Anne Powell, brother-in-law, S. Anthony Falconio, sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Rex Nelson, Florida and Deborah Pinti who was like a sister to him; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear family friend, Marilyn Ouimette.
Larry was a good and loving man of extraordinary strength, character and commitment. He was an excellent husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who cared for many people in his lifetime in a quiet, steadfast, unassuming way. He was a loyal confidant and protector, responsible, faithful, honest and dependable.
