John E. Filey
1939 - 2024
John E. Filey, 84, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Rome Health. He was born in Rome, NY, on February 17, 1939, son of the late Joseph and Ethel Keller Filey. John graduated from Vernon-Verona- Sherrill High School. In 1956, he served his country with the U.S. Air Force. John bred cattle for a few years and worked for Niagara Mohawk Corp., for the rest of his career. He was a councilman for twelve years for the Town of Lincoln. John married his best friend and love of his life, Eleanor Sasso, on October 4, 1996. She passed away April 30, 2013. John’s passion was his motorcycles.
Surviving are two children, Patrick (Jocelyn) Filey and Christine (Kelly) Florek, four step-children, Charleen (Richard) Cushman, Cheryl Pfendler, Nicole (Kevin) Hart and Daniel (Pearl) Sanborn; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren, and Fiancé, Sharon Youngs. Also surviving is a brother, Lyle (Amy) Filey, sisters, Elsie Vanslow, Cora (Paul) Schwartz, Linda Murphy, Mary (Bob) Toporcer and several nieces and nephews, to include a special nephew and niece, Alan and Beth Filey. John was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor “Ellie” Filey, three brothers, Joseph, Henry and Alfred Filey, and sisters, Ethel Filey, Elmina Hull, and Edith Fowler.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome, NY. Relatives and friends may call at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd., Rome, on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 4- 6 p.m. Burial will be in Verona Cemetery, Verona.
