I met DON at work. He was someone who helped me be able to get back to my life after some difficulties. He was very understanding and supportive. We worked to gather for quite awhile. At one point he grew a beard and it came in pretty white. My nickname for him was "Poppa Smuff". Don was always so gracious, at least to me. I have many fond memories of my friendship with Don and will miss knowing I could stop by and visit him anytime. But I believe I will see him again.

With so many things to write about Don, I don't even know where to begin. We met by chance at the bar at Michael T's, started talking, and became good friends. From that night, we would meet twice a month for our "Existential Dinner", where he had conversations that ranged from deep and personal to the completely absurd. While he tried to play off his prickly demeanor, it wouldn't take long to realize that beneath this exterior was a heart of gold and a man who cared deeply about others and our world. Don introduced me to many classic movies that I'd never seen and the voice of Peggy Lee. I, on the other hand, introduced him to the music of Grace Jones (he loved her disco version of La Vie En Rose) and some of the subversive movies of John Waters. I have so many wonderful and hilarious memories of Don; it would be hard to pick one. Although the time I lent him my copy of the movie "Pink Flamingos" without telling him anything about it is perhaps one of the funniest! I will miss Don dearly, but he will never be forgotten.

Tyson, Dad looked forward to your deep discussions and he told me about many of them. I had to find that version of La Vie En Rose for him! He was still old school and never did get the hang of music without having to play an album or CD. And John Waters?! I can't believe you told him to watch that without "warning" him!! Thanks for being a good friend to him.

I SO much enjoyed our every-other-Thursday evening dinner at Michael T's with Don and Frank (and my colleague and friend Tyson) over the past 8 years. Our conversations meandered from the psychological to the silly. I will cherish those memories. Wishing peace to the entire family.

I met Don years ago when he lived across from my dad Paul and Josephine. He was such a character! He treated my family with the utmost respect and was a great friend to my father. My sister Joyce and I called him our stepdad by proxy!!
God gained an angel and he will be forever missed. He was one in a million and could always put a smile on your face. We will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers and may God guide you all through this time and give you all comfort and strength.
